Health Insurance
All foreign researchers, with or without professional activity, residing in France on a permanent and regular basis (more than 3 months) are entitled to have their healthcare costs covered (hospitalization, doctor's visits and drug purchases, etc.) throughout their stay in France, for them and their families. This is known as universal health protection (PUMA).
The health insurance covers part of the medical expenses. Membership in a supplementary health insurance (mutuelle) is not obligatory but recommended in order to be reimbursed for the rest of the costs not covered by the health insurance. This membership is a paid one.
Your healthcare coverage depends on your situation
- PhD students with student status:
The registration with the French social security system (CPAM) is free and compulsory for all French and non-EU students. Register on the site etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr
- Researchers with a host agreement
- Spouses of researchers: spouses of researchers holding a "family passport-talent" visa may also be covered by the national social security system.
To find out more about the procedure to follow, or to obtain a list of the required documents for the application for social security entitlements, please take an appointment.
Once eligibility has been confirmed, the spouse will be given a provisional social security number, which will enable him / her to receive refunds of healthcare costs. A definitive social security number will then be issued in the months that follow.
Until the definitive social security number is issued, the spouse must send all claims for refund of healthcare costs (in the form of medical claims forms) by post to the Paris CPAM.
Minors: each member must register individually with the CPAM. Children under the age of 16 may apply for CPAM coverage, and must request to be attached either to one or both of their insured parents.
Supplementary insurance/ Private insurance
Having a private health insurance policy means that you will be better refunded for more expensive medical care that is not refunded by the social security system (dental care, optical care, hospitalization, etc.).
Some insurance companies offer international packages for "researchers ". The Euraxess Occitanie-Est Center offers a range of partnerships with private insurance companies. If you would like to get in touch with them for a quote based on your situation and needs, please take an appointment.
